The VIAF is a cooperative project initiated by the Library of Congress, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek and OCLC to match and make available a merged view of authority files from around the world.

In response to requests from the cataloging community, OCLC introduced the Expert Community Experiment, which enables cataloging members to make more changes to WorldCat records. The Experiment began in February 2009 and ran for six months, and the increased capabilities introduced as part of the program, remain available to members.
