The following enhancements were implemented to Dewey Services 20 July 2003:
The following three improvements are now apparent in WebDewey/Abridged WebDewey searching: improved search result sort; left truncation; and expanded searching capabilities.
Two improvements affect search sorting and filing: first, an improved ascending Dewey number sort; and second, improved filing of Manual, table, and schedule records.
Search results file in true ascending Dewey number order. For example, before July 2003, 363.123 filed after 363.12381 (for example, search “water safety” in the All Fields index). Now 363.123 *Water transportation files before 363.12381 Rescue operations—water safety; meaning the Dewey numerical order is retained in the new search result.
Before July 2003, table and Manual records sorted at the end of search results. Now table records file ahead of schedule records, and Manual records interfile with schedule records. For example, in search results, the Manual record for 780 now files immediately after the schedule record for 780, highlighting useful Manual records as they appear in context.
Table numbers now file first and Manual records are interfiled with schedule records.
Previously, left truncation was unavailable. Now you can use left truncation to expand a search in any index. For example, a search for “*0922” in the Dewey Numbers index no longer produces an error message. (NOTE: Searches using left truncation may take longer than searches using right truncation, but offer additional access to records. For instance, in the example above, you can now query the database to find instances of Table 1 notation 0922 for Collected persons treatment by searching *0922 [and/or *0922*] in the Dewey Numbers index. To increase search efficiency, select the index that best matches your query. For example, a search for “*073” is more efficient in the Dewey Numbers index or All Dewey index than in the All Fields index.
All mapped LCSH subdivisions are now retrieved in search results. For example, a search for “earthquake” in the All Fields index now also retrieves schedule record 621.4832 Design, construction, shielding, siting—a record in which “earthquake” appears as a part of the subdivision in the mapped LCSH, “Nuclear power plants —Earthquake effects.”
