Nonspecific Relationship Entry (R) |
|
Definition |
A linking entry describes separately cataloged publications that are related to the item you are cataloging. These fields allow the establishment of bibliographic connections among materials with diverse relationships. |
| |
Linking entry fields do not take the place of added entry fields and do not generate tracings. Use the 4xx or 8xx series fields or
field 730, for example, for added entries. Most linking entries are made for serials.
Each of the linking entry fields specifies a different bibliographic relationship between the target item described by the record and a related item. These relationships fall into the following groups:
- Related items that assist the user in continuing to search, but are not physically required to obtain the target item (e.g., former entries for serials or translations of the target item)
- Related items that have to be obtained physically in order to use the target item (e.g., the host item for a component part such as a journal issue containing a specific article)
- Related items that are constituent units of a larger whole (e.g., the individual photographs contained in a visual material collection)
The linking entry fields generate a note in the record in which they appear. Use the linking entry fields also to provide machine linkage between the bibliographic record for the target item and the bibliographic record for a related item, if the related item is covered by a separate record. |
| Terms used in linking entry fields |
Target item. A bibliographic item that is the principal or primary unit for the description of which the record was constructed. The target item is the item to which the data in
Type and
BLvl apply. The title of the target item is in the
field 245.
Related item. A bibliographic item that has either a chronological, horizontal, or vertical relationship with a target item, and for which the linking entry field is created.
Host item. A bibliographic item that either physically contains (as in the case of the component part), or bibliographically includes, (as in the case of a constituent unit), the subpart that is the target item for the record. For example: if a record describes a journal article, the host is the journal; if a record describes one digital item in a set, the host is the set.
Component part. A bibliographic item that is physically part of another bibliographic item such that the retrieval of the part is dependent on the physical identification and location of the host item (e.g., a chapter in a book or an article in a journal).
Constituent unit. A bibliographic item that is part of another item. The constituent unit is physically separate from the item of which it is considered a part
Chronological relationship. The relationship in time between bibliographic items (e.g., the relation of a serial to its predecessors and successors).
Horizontal relationship. The relationship between versions of a bibliographic item in different languages, format, media, etc.
Vertical relationship. The hierarchical relationship of the whole to its parts and the parts to the whole (e.g., a journal article to the journal or a subseries to a main entry series). |
| Construction of linking entries |
If a separate record for the related publication exists, use that record as the source of data for the linking entry.
The first choice for identification is the uniform title. If available, use the entire uniform title (e.g., title and qualifier) to identify the related publication. If the uniform title is unavailable, use the main entry and title proper. For example, if OCLC record number 6597310 has the following uniform title:
| 130 |
0 |
|
Monthly digest of statistics (Zimbabwe. Central Statistical Office) |
It would be linked to the related publication in
field 780.
| 780 |
0 |
0 |
‡t Monthly digest of statistics (Zimbabwe. Central Statistical Office) ‡w (OCoLC)6597310 |
Some records may not have uniform titles or main entries/titles because the Library of Congress used the key title and International Standard Serial Number for linking fields prior to AACR2. |
| Pre-AACR2 serials |
You must differentiate pre-AACR2 serials that have the same title proper, but no distinguishing uniform title. Use the following types of information (listed in order of preference) to differentiate among pre-AACR2 serials:
- Name of edition (subfield ‡b)
- Language (subfield ‡e)
- Country (subfield ‡f )
- Other qualifying information (subfield ‡c)
|
Subfields |
Use the following subfields in the linking entry fields. See the description of each field for the valid subfields. You are unlikely to use subfields ‡b, ‡c, ‡d, ‡e, ‡f, ‡h, ‡m, ‡n, ‡k, ‡p, ‡r, ‡u, ‡y and ‡z in serial linking entry fields constructed according to AACR2. Include final punctuation in subfields ‡a and ‡c. |
|
‡a Main entry heading |
The main entry heading data (without subfield codes) from
field 100,
field 110 or
field 111 in the related record. Individual components of the name are not recorded in a separate subfield ‡a as they would be in a 1xx field. Use subfield ‡t for the uniform title data from
field 130 in the related record.

Instructions for inputting the LCCN (from field 010 of the related record):
The LCCN in subfield ‡ w of a linking entry field corresponds to that in
field 010 subfield ‡ a of the related record. The form input in subfield ‡ w is not the one used in
field 010. Instead, it is, approximately, the machine-readable form of the LCCN. Also, there are differences in how the post-2000 and pre-2001 formats of LCCN are recorded in subfield ‡ w.
Post-2000 LCCN format:
- Always input DLC enclosed within parentheses.
- Input two leading blank spaces between the symbol (DLC) and the year information, if the LCCN has no prefix. If the LCCN has a two-character prefix, input no blank spaces between the prefix and the year numbers.
- Input the four-digit year information.
- Do not input a hyphen.
- Input the six-digit number. Input leading zeros where necessary.

- Input the two-digit year information.
- Do not input a hyphen.
- Input the six-digit number. Input leading zeros where necessary.
- Do not input trailing blank following the number. (If trailing blank is input, the OCLC system removes it.)

If you want to provide notes for nonprinting linking entry fields, use
