The following enhancements were made available in Dewey Services 15 June 2003:
The June 2003 release of WebDewey includes all the content in the new DDC 22 and additional content only available in the electronic version. WebDewey is a web-based version of the enhanced DDC 22 database and features:
Dewey Services now contains the following interface improvements:
The DDC Introduction is frequently consulted by classifiers who seek specific instruction about how the DDC is applied and how to build numbers. You can now quickly refer to the Introduction through the Show Options dropdown menu. To navigate to the Introduction, from the Show button, select the appropriate dropdown menu item: “Introduction to the DDC” in WebDewey or “Introduction to the Abr. DDC” in Abridged WebDewey.
Navigate to the Introduction through the Show Options dropdown menu
The Introduction opens in a separate Help window
Dewey Services subscribers can download the popular “Relocations, Discontinuations and Reused Numbers” resource in MS Excel format for local planning purposes. In Help, navigate to the MS Excel file through the WebDewey overview topic. The terms, “relocations,” “discontinuations,” and “reused numbers” retrieve the WebDewey overview topic in Help.
“New Features,” a summary of the changes in DDC 22, is also available through Help's WebDewey overview topic (and in PDF format on the Dewey web site). In Help, you also navigate to this resource through the WebDewey overview. The additional terms, “features,” and “new features” will also retrieve the WebDewey overview topic in Help.
Both “Relocations, Discontinuations, and Reused Numbers” and “New Features” are located in the WebDewey overview in Help. Select the Edition 22 of the Dewey Decimal Classification subtopic.
New Features is available in PDF format.
Relocations, Discontinuations, and Reused Numbers is available as a downloadable,
MS Excel file in Help. This file is also available in PDF format.
Flow charts and the optional schedule for Tanakh (both formerly only available in the print version) now appear in the database.
At 782 Vocal Music, link to the flow chart by selecting the “View” icon,
A new window opens the flow chart in PDF format.
The Quick Search/Browse feature (previously only available on schedule record pages) is now available from Search and Browse results pages.
The Quick Search/Browse feature is now also available from the Browse results page (not shown).
Previous Search/Browse entry terms are now retained at the Search, Browse, and User Notes Search screens. Classifiers often repeat searches in different indexes. To increase your searching efficiency, you can now select to retain a previous search from the Search screen.
Terms appear in highlight mode; therefore, if you do not wish to repeat a Browse, you can type over it.
NOTE: In Dewey Services, the Retain Search/Browse feature does not affect the Quick Search/Browse. Additionally, the preferred Browse index you save through General-->Admin-->Preferences-->Dewey Services Options-->Default Dewey Services Browse Index, remains as your default index preference when you use the Quick Search/Browse feature.
An Action list is now available at the bottom of the User Notes screen, enabling rapid keyboard entry of User Notes.
You can now easily navigate from your User Note to its corresponding DDC record
Remember, OCLC Connexion already contains a number of keyboard shortcuts. If Dewey Services is your active tab, the following shortcuts activate the following buttons:
<Alt> + <1> = Search (WebDewey or Abridged WebDewey)
<Alt> + <2> = Browse (WebDewey or Abridged WebDewey)
<Alt> + <3> = Create (blank User Note)
<Alt> + <4> = Show (Active Records screen)
(You can move to the Dewey Services tab in OCLC Connexion with the shortcut, <Alt>+<D>.)
Abridged WebDewey contains most of the interface enhancements detailed above, except those that do not apply to the abridged edition, such as flow charts. Abridged WebDewey is a web-based version of the enhanced Abridged 13 database. Abridged WebDewey features LCSH that have been intellectually mapped to Dewey headings by DDC editors, including many from the OCLC publication, Subject Headings for Children; links from mapped LCSH to the LCSH authority records; mappings between abridged Dewey numbers and subject headings from the latest edition of H.W. Wilson's Sears List of Subject Headings; and quarterly database updates incorporating the latest changes to the DDC, new LCSH mappings, index terms, and built numbers. The next release of Abridged WebDewey will be the last release based on Abridged 13. In January 2004, OCLC will release Abridged Edition 14 in print and web form.
