Definition |
A series title statement when the series statement and the controlled added entry form of the series title are the same. Field 440 is both a series statement and a series added entry. When a 440 field is present, a corresponding
field 830 (Series Added Entry–Uniform Title) is not used since it would duplicate the 440 field. See "
4xx Introduction" for more information. |
Guidelines |
|
| |
For unpublished and manuscript material, do not use field 440 since series statements do not apply under AACR2. |

Pre-AACR2 records. Internal punctuation in field 440 prints as input.
AACR2 records. The print program suppresses the comma that follows the series title (subfields ‡a, ‡n and ‡p) and inserts a space-semicolon-space ( ; ) preceding the number (subfield ‡v). The print program supplies a period at the end of the added entry or tracing.
