General description

OCLC symbol

NLD

Service

Provides loan or copy service for Canadian publications (books, serials, theses, newspapers on microfilm); loan service for archival microfilm.

Formerly the National Library of Canada, it has amalgamated with the National Archives of Canada and offers an integrated ILL service for:

  1. published material (books, newspapers, theses) and
  2. unpublished archival material which has been reproduced in microfilm format (e.g. census records, passenger and immigration lists, genealogical material, prime ministers' papers, etc.).

If unable to supply from own collections, NLD tries to locate material in other Canadian libraries. Notification is sent in the form of a message to the requesting library's e-mail address providing library symbols that represent Canadian libraries holding the item and/or an explanatory note providing reason unfilled. NLD does not offer a forwarding service.

Coverage

Legal depository for Canadian publications in all subject areas. Microform collection of Canadian theses and newspapers. Some scientific material mainly in official publications and theses. Also Canadian archival material reproduced in microfilm.

Bibliography/index of holdings

AMICUS at the following URL: http://amicus.nlc-bnc.ca/aaweb/aalogine.htm is the Canadian national catalogue that contains not only the holdings for NLD, but also holdings from over 1300 Canadian libraries as well as CONSER and LC source records for which no holdings may be reported.

Workform instructions for ordering via OCLC ILL

Enter NLD at least 5 times in lender string. If NLD is able to fill the request, the status of the item will change to SHIPPED. All follow-up messages such as status inquiries, renewals, etc. must be done through OCLC.

If the item is not found or not available from the LAC collection, status will change to UNFILLED. NLD will also automatically search for other Canadian library locations. A follow-up message will be sent to the requesting library's e-mail address with a list of symbols of Canadian libraries that are reported to hold the item, and/or an explanatory note providing reason unfilled.

Borrowers must approach alternate locations directly if they wish to pursue the request. Check the web directory of Symbols and Interlibrary Loan Policies in Canada, which lists detailed name, address, and ILL policy information for each symbol. The directory is available on the Web free of charge at: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/illcandir-bin/illsear/l=0/c=1.

Third party requests

  1. NLD's lending service can accommodate libraries that send requests as part of a centralized service, with the Ship-to address being different from the address of the requesting institution.
  2. For the delivery of articles by fax, Ariel or post-to-web, documents will be sent to the library that sent the request.

NLD does not accept OCLC Direct Requests.
