Ernie Ingles Receives Queen's Jubilee Medal
Ernie Ingles, Associate Vice-President (Academic) received the Queen's Jubilee Medal in recognition of his outstanding contributions and service to libraries. Ernie received the award along with 28 other recipients on May 6 in a ceremony held at Government House.
The Golden Jubilee Medal of Queen Elizabeth II commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of Her Majesty's reign as Queen of Canada, and is awarded to Canadians who have made a significant contribution to their fellow citizens, their community or to Canada.
Ernie was nominated for the award by the Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable Lois E. Hole, for his significant contributions to, and advocacy on behalf of, all sectors of the library community.
Said Ingles, "It is a great honour to receive this award, and in particular, it is a special privilege to have been nominated for the Queen's Jubilee Medal by Lieutenant Governor, Lois Hole."
Noted among Ernie's contributions were his participation on over 120 professional associations and related committees, including the presidency of the Canadian Library Association, the founding of the Northern Exposure Leadership Institute, and his current involvement as Chair of the Canadian Initiative on Digital Libraries.
Ernie was also a key player in the development of The Lois Hole Library Legacy program, a program designed to encourage Albertans to help build the collections of their libraries through donations. Donations to the legacy program can be made to participating libraries, including the University of Alberta Libraries.

WorldCat Link to CONTENTdm
Libraries and other cultural heritage institutions using CONTENTdmTM Digital Collection Management Software will soon be able to make unique digitized collections more visible and accessible to thousands of libraries through WorldCat (the OCLC Online Union Catalog), the world's most comprehensive database of bibliographic information.
The WorldCat link is a new feature of CONTENTdm version 3.5, to be released in July 2003. The new feature will allow libraries and other institutions to automatically add records of their unique digital collection materials to WorldCat.
CONTENTdm is an easy-to-use software solution that helps institutions organize a variety of digital materials, including photographs, maps and historic documents. CONTENTdm associates Dublin Core metadata with the digitized items and stores them locally. With the WorldCat link to CONTENTdm, metadata harvested automatically from CONTENTdm servers are then converted to MARC format, loaded into WorldCat and made available to library patrons searching the OCLC FirstSearch service.
"The automatic harvesting of metadata for digital objects from CONTENTdm servers will give searchers of WorldCat access not only to the description of the digital object, but links to the objects themselves," said Phyllis B. Spies, vice president, OCLC Worldwide Library Services. "This is another step in our ongoing effort to transform WorldCat from a bibliographic database and online union catalog to a globally networked information resource of text, graphics, sound and motion."
Institutions using CONTENTdm see the WorldCat link as a means to getting more exposure for their special collections and unique items of interest to information seekers worldwide.
"We have used CONTENTdm to put a large, diverse and valuable set of digital collections online within the University of Washington Libraries," said Lizabeth Wilson, director of University Libraries, University of Washington, and a member of the OCLC Board of Trustees. "The new WorldCat-CONTENTdm link is very exciting because it provides global access to our collections in the context of the leading library information discovery system—WorldCat."
In addition to the WorldCat link, CONTENTdm version 3.5 will offer:
- Web templates ready to use out of the box or fully customizable to meet organizational needs
- Language support for Roman-based language character sets so that screens can be customized to support local languages, and users can build non-English collections and multi-lingual sites
- Viewer enhancements-such as multiple display options for search results, including titles only, thumbnails, a grid of selected fields that can be sorted, and a descriptive or bibliographic display similar to Web search tools-so collection owners can select the display mode most appropriate for their collections

FirstSearch Adds Outbound Linking to Cisti for Document Delivery
FirstSearch administrators may now use the FirstSearch administrative module to activate a link that lets users order documents during a FirstSearch search session from the Canadian Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (CISTI), a full-text document supplier.
When this purchase option is enabled, links appear in detailed records for citations for which the institution does not make full text available through the FirstSearch service. If a library wants to provide access to CISTI to its users, the FirstSearch administrator may enable the option in the Resource Linking -> Outbound Linking area of the administrative module.
The default for linking to CISTI is OFF.
When a user clicks on the link labeled Order Article from CISTI, he will access the CISTI site from within FirstSearch.
After creating a profile, the user may logon to CISTI to purchase the article and return to FirstSearch by clicking the Return button.
FirstSearch Staff Resource Sharing View
A new view of FirstSearch now allows ILL staff to create full ILL requests with lenders from within FirstSearch.
Library staff can access the resource sharing view from a link in the FirstSearch interface or by logging in to FirstSearch using their ILL authorization and password. Institutions with one ILL authorization and one FirstSearch authorization have had their authorizations linked by OCLC; other libraries will need to link their authorizations via the FirstSearch administrative module.
WorldCat
Aux amateurs de livres international Contributes MARC Records to WorldCat
OCLC pursues relationships with vendors of library materials and bibliographic records for the contribution of bibliographic records to WorldCat®. On August 8, 2003, Aux Amateurs de Livres International became the newest material vendor to contribute MARC records to WorldCat for the titles they supply to libraries.
Aux Amateurs is a vendor of French-language materials published in France and in all French-speaking countries, including Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, Africa and the Caribbean. Based in Paris, Aux Amateurs has supplied University Libraries and Documentation Centers with books and periodicals since 1930. More recently, the company began providing multimedia materials in French and non-French.
For more information about Aux Amateurs and their services, you may visit their website, which is offered in four languages--English, French, German, and Spanish.
Aux Amateurs joins five other international vendors who contribute bibliographic records to WorldCat as participants in the Vendor Record Contribution Program.
New OCLC Web feature allows visitors to view most recent records entered into WorldCat
A new feature on the OCLC Web site allows visitors to see the most recent individual cataloged records added to WorldCat, the world's largest database of bibliographic information. On average, a new record is added to WorldCat every 12 seconds. The new Web feature shows the latest records as they are added to WorldCat in eight-second intervals. Each brief record, as it appears on the Web site feature, includes the OCLC number, title, author, publisher, publication date, language, format and contributing institution.

Cataloguing
Connexion Client: Windows application, for power cataloguing
For those who prefer the familiarity and power of a desktop application over Web-based tools, a Windows-based interface is available as a free download.
The Connexion client provides much of the same cataloguing functionality as exists in the browser interface, while adding productivity-boosting enhancements including macros, additional keyboard customization-you can perform all navigation and cataloging actions using assignable key combinations-and integrated label printing. Enhancements, such as offline local files and batch processing, are planned for later releases of the client. More information...
Interlibrary Loan
The New ILL Policies Directory
Since August 24, 2003 interlibrary loan policies no longer reside in the Name-Address Directory (NAD). We encourage libraries to enter ILL policies, contacts and site information into the new ILL Policies Directory as soon as possible.
The ILL Policies Directory is available directly at this URL https://illpolicies.oclc.org/. There are also links to the policies website within ILL Web and in OCLC ILLiad. For more information, see the Getting Started with the OCLC ILL Policies Directory.
