Members Council: The voice of OCLC member libraries

2003 Members Council

The focus of the 2002/2003 Members Council was two-fold:

  • Libraries, Their Present and Future Global Environment: National, Regional, Local
  • OCLC Strategic Plans and Measurements for Success

Both were required for Members Council to better understand and to contribute to the future development of OCLC as a thriving partner for libraries in the 21st century. Both were designed to facilitate Members Council in its role of assisting the OCLC Board of Trustees and management in the continued development of OCLC as a worldwide, world-class, library cooperative. As OCLC works to position itself as a leader in library services on a global scale, Members Council is also working to position itself to provide new ideas and useful feedback that represent a global view for the benefit of the global cooperative of libraries and other cultural institutions.

Accomplishments of Members Council this year include:

  • Reinvigorating the Library Groups, and raising their visibility and their importance within the context of Council meetings.
  • Continuing to push the Council upstream in advising OCLC on strategic issues. We have also made progress in this area as witnessed by the important work done by the Task Force on Staff Development that was reported out and voted on at the May Members Council meeting.
  • The most important innovation this year was closing the feedback loop between Council and OCLC leadership, getting our recommendations and OCLC’s response to them down in black and white for all the delegates to see and if necessary revisit from time to time.
  • A joint goal between the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee opened even further the lines of communication between the Board and Members Council. Trustees were involved in presentations at all three meetings and assigned to specific Interest and Library Type groups. At the May meeting the Chair of the Board of Trustees gave a speech highlighting Board activities for the year for the Council’s edification.
  • Lastly, the Executive Committee thought it was important to continue raising the awareness of the Members Council to the needs and concerns of OCLC members from outside of the U.S. Toward that end, Aziz Abid, Director of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Informatics Program, was a guest speaker. A panel of delegates from a variety of international backgrounds discussed library issues in their regions, and the business plan for OCLC Latin America and the Caribbean was discussed. When dividing up who went where within Members Council, international delegates were intentionally included on key committees and spread among different interest and library groups.

Thank you to all delegates, who gave so generously of your personal and professional time in order to participate in Members Council! Because of your participation and also the efforts of many OCLC and network staff, Council has moved forward in achieving its ambitious goals. Thereby, we in the OCLC cooperative are making further progress together toward the overarching vision of furthering access to the world’s information by offering valuable, collaborative services for libraries and their users.
