IFLA – OCLC Programme of events announced

This year IFLA is being held in Milan, Italy. As in other years OCLC will be both exhibiting and also contributing to the overall programme of events. Here is your opportunity to get a first glimpse at the OCLC events that will be taking place.

Some of these events are as you can see tailored for a particular library audience. If there are events you wish to attend you will need to go to the electronic registration forms and register there. These forms will go live on 6 July.

Sunday 23 August
14.00-18.00 Exhibition opens.  OCLC will be exhibiting at Stand 300.
Monday 24 August
14.00-15.30 End User Discovery tools: OCLC Perspectives
Discovery tools have reached a tipping point. There is now widespread acceptance by libraries of the need for more sophisticated end-user discovery tools replacing conventional OPACs. OCLC offers two important and unique perspectives on the directions libraries can and are taking when selecting such tools, based on its experience of working with libraries across the world.

Venue: Hotel Melia Milano, Tenerife Room
Tuesday 25 August
09.00-11.00 EMEA Regional Council Information Session
This meeting is open to libraries in Europe, Middle East and Africa and will describe the changes to OCLC Governance and provide information about the new OCLC EMEA Regional Council, its structure and activities. Participants will be able to meet with the EMEARC Chair and members of the initial Executive Committee and provide input to the planning of the first EMEARC meeting in February 2010.

14.00-15.30 African Library Directors Meeting
OCLC and Sabinet (OCLC's partner in Sub-Saharan Africa) will be talking about how OCLC solutions in the areas of management, eContent, metadata, discovery and delivery are particularly suited to the African library environment. Our focus will be on solutions for library staff and end-users that are cost effective, easy to implement and sustainable.

Refreshments will be served at the end of the event.

Venue: Fiera Milano Convention Centre, Orange 3 Meeting Room

Wednesday 26 August

13.45-15.45 Industry Symposium—The future of management services on the web
The provision of management applications online, accessible through a web browser, with software and data hosted "in the cloud" is a model now in common use in many business environments. OCLC will explore what it means for libraries to have management services delivered in this way. Will a technology shift trigger similar systemic change? And in what ways can we expect library workflows to be enhanced and streamlined by a shift of services to the web? OCLC's recent announcement to develop the first cooperative web scale management service will be discussed as part of this Industry Symposium, and an update will be given on this and other OCLC strategic initiatives.

Venue: Fiera Milano Convention Centre, TBC
