Overview

OCLC Bibliographic Record Notification eases catalog maintenance by electronically delivering updated MARC records to your library. It’s also a helpful companion service to WorldCat Local, WorldCat Cataloging Partners, and CatExpress. The result: your staff spends less time searching and editing and has more time for other complex cataloging tasks.

Every day, the Bibliographic Record Notification service compares all upgraded OCLC MARC records to the records your library has its holdings symbol attached to, and then sends you upgraded records based on a detailed profile that tells us what updates are important to you. You receive new records by Electronic Data Exchange (EDX) or download them from OCLC Product Services, then load the upgraded records into your system. Reports summarizing the type of upgrades and quantity of records being delivered are also available.

How it works

  1. You complete a profile, indicating the record options and upgrades your library would like to receive.
  2. Based on your profile options and the WorldCat records upgraded everyday, your library can receive upgraded records everyday.
  3. You can receive your upgraded records via EDX or from Product Services Web, for downloading to your local system.

Options available

As part of your Bibliographic Record Notification profile, you choose to receive one or both of these MARC record upgrades:

  • OCLC-MARC records that have been upgraded from minimal-level to full-level cataloging
  • OCLC-MARC records in which the 505 field, Table of Contents, has been added, enhanced or deleted in WorldCat

You can also:

  • Limit the type of records received by format, encoding level and publication date (for instance, receive only those records that are upgraded from Encoding Level 8 in Books (BKS) format from 1990 forward)
  • Exclude delivery of records your library upgrades
  • Have the call number field moved to another location in the MARC record to assure that the record does not overwrite your locally assigned call number
  • Add a local note to your upgraded OCLC-MARC record
