Elisabeth Niggemann

Director General, Deutsche Nationalbibliothek

Elisabeth Niggemann is the Director General at the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (German National Library), a position she has held since she was appointed in 1999.

After her exams as an Academic Librarian, Elisabeth became head of the acquisition department at the German Central Library for Medicine in Cologne in 1987. In 1989, she became head of the cataloguing and subject indexing department at the University and State Library in Düsseldorf while she also worked as a subject specialist. In 1994, she became the Director of the University and State Library in Düsseldorf. From 1990-1995, she lectured also at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf in Information Science.

Elisabeth is a member of the IFLA Standing Committee on National Libraries, the Conference of Directors of National Libraries, Chair of the Conference of European National Librarians, Chair of the European Digital Library Foundation, a member of the High Level Group on Digital Libraries of the European Commission and member of several library advisory boards. She is an editor of the Zeitschrift für Bibliothekswesen und Bibliographie and a member of the advisory board of Libri. She joined the OCLC Board of Trustees in 2004.

Elisabeth holds a PhD in biology from Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
