Research Habits—Looking at how Students Cite

Citations—the glue that helps keep research papers accurate, yet an aspect of the research process many students don't fully understand.

  • In a College and Research Libraries analysis, 71% of students had only 1-5 citations listed in their papers
  • In EasyBib survey of 2600 students, 40% of respondents said they sometimes or rarely add a citation when they paraphrase another person's ideas
  • In the same survey, more than half (54%) said they would be less likely to cite sources altogether if they did not have access to bibliographic management tools

How are students interpreting and synthesizing information? How many sources are they using in their papers? When are they citing, and how do they assemble their sources?
