I no longer see references to "WebDewey in CORC" on the Dewey web site. Instead, it mentions WebDewey (OCLC Cataloging Services Edition) and several other services that include the word WebDewey in their names. What is the relationship between these and WebDewey in CORC, and what is the relationship among them?
The first release of a service with "WebDewey" in its name occurred in July 2000, when OCLC also released the CORC (Cooperative Online Resource Catalog) service. We called it, rather informally, "WebDewey in CORC," because it was available (by separate subscription) only to users who had access to the CORC service. To date, that has been the only available web version of the DDC.
In conjunction with the January 2002 release of three new web versions of the DDC, we are renaming "WebDewey in CORC" to "WebDewey (OCLC Cataloging Services Edition)." The parenthetical "(OCLC Cataloging Services Edition)" following WebDewey indicates that WebDewey is being used in conjunction with the other OCLC cataloging services to which you have access, whether that is copy cataloging with CatExpress or cataloging in WorldCat. The parenthetical expression also serves to distinguish this version of WebDewey from one of our three forthcoming services, which will be called, simply, WebDewey.
WebDewey will have the same interface and database as the service you have used under the name WebDewey in CORC. However, WebDewey—as distinguished from WebDewey (OCLC Cataloging Services Edition)—will be available only to those who do not use OCLC cataloging services.
Exciting enhancements are in store for all WebDewey users. As of the next quarterly update, which will occur on December 17, 2001 (it's the "January" update but appears early because of holiday schedules), a user notes feature will be included in the service. This will allow you to create notes to reflect local classification decisions. Notes that are attached to numbers in the WebDewey database will be displayed when you access that WebDewey record. Site-license users will be able to designate whether a note should be displayed to all users at the institution or whether a note is intended only for viewing by its creator. In addition, the mapped LCSH in WebDewey will be updated to include terms from the publication People, Places & Things. Further information about all WebDewey enhancements will be e-mailed to current subscribers on December 17.
The other two new web services are Abridged WebDewey (OCLC Cataloging Services Edition) and Abridged WebDewey. The relationships between these two products will be analogous to those of the WebDewey products: Abridged WebDewey (OCLC Cataloging Services Edition) will be available to OCLC cataloging services users, and Abridged WebDewey, based on the same database and with an identical interface, will be available to libraries who do not use OCLC cataloging services.
